On Saturday, 12 teams took to Good Harbor Beach to participate in the New England Beach Soccer Cup, that was being held for the first time since 2010. Despite the uncooperative weather to start the day, about 100 people still showed up to either play or watch the event, including a few curious bystanders who were already on the beach. Music was blaring, people were dancing and not even the weather could deter the overall interest or enjoyment in the event. This modified beach soccer version has some interesting modifications that appeal to both fans and players alike.
Jalapenos Restaurant Announced as Tournament Title Sponsor

The New England Beach Soccer Cup is proud to introduce this year’s Title Sponsor, Jalapeno’s Restaurant. Jalapenos is without a doubt one of the best Mexican restaurants in the region and a gem among local residents. Mike and I head to Jalapenos at least twice a week to enjoy the food, drinks and atmosphere. Most importantly, what sets Jalapenos apart from the rest is the people. Alex, Luis and Jaime are some of the nicest, most genuine people you will ever meet and their personality is carried on throughout the entire staff. We could not be happier to have them be a part of the tournament this year and we hope to continue the relationship for many more years.
After the tournament we will all be heading to Jalapenos at 9pm to bring all of the participants and fans together. There, we will announce the individual awards as well as the Championship Trophy to the winning team. We hope to see everyone there for what will be an extraordinary event. Let’s celebrate!

It’s been a wild week in the media for New England Beach Soccer. Following our featured article in The Boston Sunday Globe, we were also featured in our local paper “The Gloucester Daily Times”. I’ve been receiving the times at my doorstep since I was in elementary school and I have come to the realization that no matter how old you get, it is still a special feeling to be mentioned in The Gloucester Daily Times. There are several unique sporting events in Gloucester that represent the city’s character such as the Greasy Pole and the Blackburn Challenge. City residents Joe LaRocca and Mike Torres are hoping that the New England Beach Soccer Cup can be added to that list in the future.
LaRocca and Torres, 23 and 24 years old respectively and both 2006 Gloucester High School graduates, started the outdoor beach soccer tournament in 2010 as a trial run, and next Saturday, June 16, the tournament will back at Good Harbor Beach (9:00 a.m.) and revamped.

Soccer on the sand coming to Gloucester
A few were born and raised here; others played their high school soccer here. Many others moved on, but will be returning in two weeks for a grand reunion of sorts for old time’s sake.
They will flock back to participate in the third annual New England Beach Soccer Cup on the sand of Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester. Games are scheduled for June 16-17, runing from 9 a.m. until dusk. It’s a 5-on-5 (plus goaltenders) round-robin tournament featuring 12 teams — most from Gloucester, but others from Southern New Hampshire University, Saint Anselm College, Endicott College, and Salem State University.

Bringing Something New to the Harbor

On June 16, 2012, Good Harbor Beach will be the site of The New England Beach Soccer Cup. The tournament brings twelve teams from all over New England to the beautiful shores of America’s oldest seaport.
What excites us most about organizing this event is the prospect of bringing something truly unique to the community. Gloucester is where we were born and where we grew up. We went to Gloucester Public Schools and played GHS athletics. We are extremely proud of our community and what it has provided us. Now it is our turn to add something to Gloucester. We invite every person in the community to Good Harbor Beach on June 16th for what will be one of the most unique events the island has hosted. We want to thank everyone for the support thus far and we are very anxious to unveil this event to everyone.

Team Profile: The Franchise

If there is one team most eager to get back on the sand it has to be defending champions, The Franchise. One of the players that stood out the most in the previous tournament was MVP and top goaltender Pedro Marnoto. Marnoto is coming off a stellar performance on the beach and is looking to captain his side to their second straight title. However, there are many questions that remain unanswered for this year’s squad. The Franchise come in to this year’s event with many new faces to the team. The Franchise are another hometown favorite with many former Gloucester High School Soccer standouts. Among those are brothers Andrew and Mark Pierce as well as former GHS Captain Jesse Correia. Forward Andrew Pierce is currently the all-time leading goal scorer in GHS history, a record that has held true for over 10 years. Despite having an adjusted roster at this year’s event, one thing’s for certain, the drive to win remains constant. If Marnoto can pull off a repeat performance than we might see The Franchise hoist the trophy for the second straight time.
Team Profile: Slippery Demons F.C.

The Slippery Demons are a team to surely grab some attention at this year’s tournament. Captained by forward Frank “Chico” Cypriano,The Demons are looking to claim the NEBS Cup title in their first year of competition. The Demons feature players from across the Greater Boston and North Shore area and will be one of the teams looking to add a jolt of Brazilian flare to the tournament. Two of their top players, Marcus Pizzetti and Marcello Silva, have recently returned from playing stints in Brazil. The Demons also feature top players from Saint Anselm College and Framingham State University including Kevin Van Lenten and Joel Kayima. The Demons will certainly bring a beautiful brand of soccer to Good Harbor and we are very excited to have them a part of this year’s competition.
Team Profile: JellyFish F.C.

Jellyfish F.C. is a debutante to The New England Beach Soccer Cup. Featuring various players from the Gloucester soccer community, The Jellyfish are sure to be hometown favorites on the beach. Alex Trotsky, A Gloucester native and Mcgill University Soccer Player will look to inject his quickness and stamina to the side, while former former Southern New Hampshire University Forward and Gloucester High School star Shane O’Neill will carry a majority of the finishing duties up top. Included in the squad are former GHS players Anthony La Rocca and Luke Cosgrove who will most certainly add versatility to the group. The squad will also feature players from various clubs across the region who will look to translate their skill to the sand. What is certain about this squad is that they will represent the local community very well.
Team Profile: The Penmen

Surely one of the favorites in this year’s competition, The Penmen feature many of the players from Division II soccer powerhouse Southern New Hampshire University. Captained by Gloucester native Paul D’angelo, the Penmen bring both fitness and athleticism to the tournament on sand. Other notable Gloucester natives to make the team are former Rochester Institute of Technology defenseman Kyle Grimaldi and GHS Alumni Vinny Parisi and Dominic Taormina. The SNHU players on the roster include Division II standouts Danny Hernandez and Michael Adam. The Penmen look to be one of the stronger teams in the tournament and will certainly be a team to keep an eye on.
